Update (June 13th, 2019):
On June 10th, 2019, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party announced that the Government of Canada is taking additional steps to reduce Canada’s plastic pollution, promote safe alternatives that can be used rather than plastics and working with provincial and territorial governments in order to implement the Canada-wide Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste. Not only are they implementing a ban on single-use plastics as early as 2021, they are also enforcing companies that manufacture plastic products or sell items with plastic packaging to be responsible for the manufacturing and proper recycling of their plastic waste rather than putting the onus on the consumer.
The announcement by the Government of Canada relates to the petition run by Natalie Perry with feedback from the students of Frederick Banting Alternate School to create change in the manufacturing and recycling of plastic waste. This petition outlined suggestions on the manufacturing of plastics, including the use of appropriate symbols and shifting the blame from consumers to the manufacturers and companies that use the plastics. The announcement made on June 10th, 2019 enforces these suggestions that had been outlined in the petition, and promotes a cleaner environment with less plastic pollution. This is a great step in the progress of reducing climate change impacts through human behaviour and protecting our planet from further destruction. These environmental initiatives improve the quality of life for all beings on Earth. This will hopefully encourage the youth of Canada to create change and brings them hope for a future free of plastic pollution and the devastating impacts of environmental pollution.
Our final suggestions would be to implement a universal recycling symbol system, as mentioned in the petition, to reduce worldwide plastic waste. This universal symbol system would have a positive international impact on plastic pollution and aims to reduce plastic waste on a global scale. Another suggestion includes that there should be standards for the expected life of a product, stating how long a product is expected to last and find ways to make these products have longer life expectancies. This will aim to go beyond plastic pollution and help dispose of all types of products properly. Not only should the aim to be to reduce plastic pollution but also to reduce overall pollution through proper reuse and recycling of every single product that is created and purchased. Plastic pollution is one of many issues, therefore this would improve the reduction of overall pollution on our planet. Single-use products should be discouraged and alternative, longer lasting products should be promoted in order to reduce overall garbage rates around the world.
